4 Major Causes of Pain

#1 Contraction

What is a contraction?  A contraction is when a muscle gets locked in a firing position. It’s literally firing 24-7.

 

Contractions occur when a muscle receives a severe enough trauma either through a single physical occurrence or through the accumulation of stresses over time. Repetitive motions and gripping are ways we develop contractions over time. There are varying degrees of contraction. A trigger point is a small contraction. A trigger point is when a few fibers of a muscle get locked in a position of firing and it gets hyper-sensitive.  Imagine how exhausting that would be to have a muscle firing 24-7. For example, if you had to hold your arm out to the side even for 10 minutes most people couldn’t do it. Yet this is exactly what’s happening in areas of chronic soreness and pain. A chronically sore shoulder for example will have 3 or more muscles which are at least partially locked in a contracted state. They most often form a triangle pattern - deltoid, teres, rhomboid. Sometimes people mistakenly think these contracted muscles are weak, but they are actually very strong. They’re just exhausted from being locked in a state of firing all the time. So, trying to strengthen an already contracted muscle is going to make it worse.

3: Adhesions

#2 Slackened

If you picture the musculoskeletal system as an elaborate system of pulleys and levers which is essentially what it is - then you can picture what I’m about to say.

 

When a muscle(s) is traumatized to the point of going into contraction - then necessarily something else will go slack in response. When a contraction occurs its antagonist or its opposite will go limp or inert as a result.

#3 Adhesion

When a slackening occurs that tissue is inert. It’s not moving or firing it’s just lying still.

 

When this happens for long enough it gets stuck to the tissue around it that it’s laying on. A healthy muscle will never get adhesed because it's constantly moving and firing. But a slackened muscle will like cement stick together with tissue around it. So now instead of gliding over one another as things are supposed to happen the muscles are moving as a clump. Adhesions happen all over the body and can be found anywhere there is pain.

#4 Nerve Impingement

When contractions and adhesions get severe enough the entire area gets less and less blood and becomes more hardened. It becomes like a vice grip and begins to squeeze a nerve.

 

Nerve impingements can feel just like muscle pain. A sure sign of a nerve impingement is tingling and numbness in the fingers, arm or neck/head. This indicates an impingement in the brachial plexus nerve complex and often the ulnar nerve in the arm.
